Network Services is responsible for managing a complex network that spans the Knoxville campus and remote sites scattered around the region. Network Services’ responsibilities include the management of the local network (both wired and wireless), a range of wide area connections, and Internet/Internet2 connectivity. In addition, the group manages various security devices such as firewalls, VPN (Virtual Private Network) access devices, IPS devices (Intrusion Prevention Systems).
There is a big difference between sitting on your couch at home, browsing the internet on your ipad and having dozens of staff accessing file and mail servers, printing big documents and editing videos.
Yes, Wi-Fi speeds and ranges have increased dramatically over the last few years, but that is part of the problem. Stand in your office and let your phone scan for available network signals. I bet there are scores of them, all competing for the airwaves and all interfering with your signal.
- Firewalls:Two core firewalls and a multitude of smaller, department-size firewalls, are deployed and managed by Network Services.
- Secure remote accessis facilitated through VPN access devices (appliances) that support both IPSec and SSL/VPN access.
- Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS)are deployed at strategic locations on the network in order to provide an additional layer of security and compliance for the campus community.
